Bible, History, and Geography

For kindergarten through second grade, I personally prefer to keep history simple and living by focusing primarily on early American biographies. At these ages, children often connect much more naturally with people and stories than with broad timelines and historical overviews.

One resource our family has especially loved during these early years is the bfbooks.com⁠ curriculum. Their gentle literature-based approach makes history feel warm, memorable, and deeply human. Through beautiful stories and biographies, young children begin developing a natural love for history long before they are asked to analyze dates and events in detail.

At this stage, my main goal is simply to help children form meaningful connections with people, places, and stories from the past while cultivating wonder, imagination, and a love for learning.

However, if you already have older children studying through a chronological history cycle, the younger ones can simply join in alongside the family. Young children often absorb far more than we realize simply by listening, observing, dressing up, hearing the stories, and participating naturally in family learning. In many ways, these shared family lessons become some of the sweetest memories of home education.

It took me many years, and many different attempts, to finally settle on resources we truly loved for Bible, history, and geography for grades 3+. Over time, we tried a variety of approaches, searching for something that felt living, peaceful, rich, and deeply connected rather than fragmented into separate subjects.

Eventually, we found ourselves continually returning to the resources from Simply Charlotte Mason for Bible, history, and geography. Their gentle, living approach fit beautifully within the atmosphere we hoped to cultivate in our home.

One of the things I especially love is that these resources approach history from a biblical worldview. Rather than separating Bible history from world history, they help children see that all of history ultimately unfolds within God’s creation and under His providence.

The one thing I wanted to do differently, however, was combine Bible, history, and geography into one unified subject. I wanted our children to see how places, people, nations, and biblical events all fit together across time.

I especially love combining world history and Bible history because they truly are not two separate histories. There is only one history—the history of God’s world and the people He created. 

I also enjoy adding geography alongside these lessons because geography helps history become more living and understandable. Children begin to see where events happened, how people lived, how landscapes shaped cultures, and how God placed nations and peoples throughout the world He made.

For that reason, I organized the lessons from these resources into chronological order so that the children could move naturally through history while also seeing where places, people, and biblical events fit together across time.

We also enjoy bringing history to life through simple costumes related to the time period we are studying. My children especially love this part of our lessons. Since I have three children who enjoy dressing up, I purchased one Bible-times outfit, one Egyptian outfit, and one Roman outfit, and they simply rotate between them.

The costumes are worn only during our Bible, history, and geography lessons, and we store them in our school room afterward rather than keeping them available for everyday play. I have found that this helps preserve the specialness and excitement surrounding our history lessons.

Of course, costumes are not necessary to create meaningful lessons, and many families could easily recreate simple outfits using items they already own. A shawl, scarf, belt, sheet, or simple tunic-style clothing can go a long way in helping children imagine the world they are learning about.

But if you would like to purchase costumes, these are the ones our family has especially enjoyed. I would recommend purchasing a larger size if possible, especially if you plan to cycle through history again in future years. I purchased the largest size available so all three of my children could wear them over the years. They are oversized on the younger children, but they truly do not mind at all. In fact, I think the children simply delight in stepping for a moment into another time and place.

These little touches may seem small, but they often help lessons become more memorable, living, and meaningful for young children.

These are the customs for Ancient times:

-Early Bible times gown (it was cheaper to buy this than a gown on its own,  we keep the gown in the school room and the accesories are in the pretend play basket for theyr dayli use).

-Early Bible times scarf to wear over the head.
